Why? |
First thing to say about this is: check out our overview of CCSS under curriculum information. We have a lot of work to do in seventh grade! As much as I wish it weren't true, it is impossible to do it all in class. Plus, students sometimes see school in a bubble with no real application to daily life, but as we all know, school helps you figure out the world around you and can open doors for the future, and when students practice skills and take it outside of the classroom, it's easier to see the big picture. Students need to practice skills they learn about in class so that then become routine for them.

Who? |
All students benefit from homework. Everything we do takes practice in order to become better and more natural. Take walking, a baby doesn't naturally know how to do this. A baby will practice, fall, get up and try again, and before you know it, your house needs baby proofing so that they don't tumble down the stairs. Students need to do the same with the skills they learn in the classroom so that they can be successful in their aspirations and personal life.

When? |
Every Wednesday there will be a specific assignment for your student to complete. Also, your child should read for a minimum of 20 minutes a day at home (or about two hours spread through the week) and fill out a reading journal. Please help your child find an appropriate fit (ask them about the 5 finger rule) and interesting book. The library staff is very helpful in this Des Moines Southside Library. Also look for my student page to find other resources for at home activities.
|
What? |
I will always attempt to give students homework that they can complete at home with minimal supplies and that they can accomplish independently or with little help. I believe that homework should be something that students can accomplish with success and a task that help students practice and develop essential reading and language arts skills.

Where? |
We all lead very busy lives and there are many distractions (Netflix binge?); however, students benefit from routine and clear expectations. Please help your student to understand homework needs to be done weekly and turned in promptly and regularly. You can help your student by providing them with a distraction free environment, like a kitchen table; giving them the necessary materials, like pencil and paper; and allowing them the time in their home schedule to complete assignments. This is an amazing resource for students to help with planning and tracking academics: My Study Life.
