SRG: Standards Referrence GradingEvery student learns at a different rate and to a different level and standard Reference Grading (SRG) is a research based approach to accurately assess students and to provide for opportunities to grow and correct mistakes or misunderstandings. It measures whether a student is proficient on grade level standards.
After your child is taught the necessary standard and skills and given an opportunity to practice the standard, then they will be assessed using a Common Formative Assessment (CFA), which is like a quiz. These formative assessments are meant to be checkpoint, but are also graded and recorded. The goal is that by the end of teaching a certain standard, the students are proficient or very close. Standard Reference Grading Q and A from the Des Moines District Students are welcome to retake the CFA or to redo an assignment after school or during success time until the end of the semester (January or May). If you need further assistance, I am in my room from 7:30 to 7:45 and 2:30 to 3:15. I can be available at other times, if previously arranged with the teacher. I would be delighted to help you however I can. |
The grading policy has changed within recent years and instead of assigning letter grades, we use a four point grading scale. This chart shows how to translate the numbers into letter grades. |
We like to say that a student is proficient on a standard. That can be hard to translate into meaning. This chart is something I found that gives a clearer explanation on the meaning of the numbers. |
Activities & HomeworkIn the classroom we do a variety of classroom activities that are research based strategies and practices. I pride myself on facilitating a classroom build on differentiation with high expectations and rigor. Please feel free to set up a classroom visit; however, please know that I might put you to work.

Success TimeSuccess time is a block of time on Mondays and Thursdays which allows students to get caught up on work, retake or make up CFAs or assignments, and to have enrichment. The student might be requested, like say to science to make up a test when he/she is ill. Or a student can pick a class where they need a little more practice or time on classroom materials.

CFAAlmost every week we will take a Common Formative Assessment (CFA) on the current skill and standard that we are working on. These formative assessments will be graded. If a student is not happy with their grade, they are welcome to retake the CFA after school or during success time until the end of the semester (January). It's up to them to make the arrangements. Hopefully, the students get the hint when I remind them everyday.
